Urgent Message from DG

2011.03.15
On the Recovery Plans of the Recent Earthquake

Director General Atsuto Suzuki

We would like to appreciate for your messages with deep sympathy and sincere support.

KEK Tsukuba Campus and J-PARC experienced severe earthquake around 14:46 JST on March 11. Accelerators were stopped immediately as the quark hit the region. There are no hazards to the environment regarding the operations of our accelerators. Also there are no casualties of staffs and users on both campuses.

Despite the many aftershocks, our staffs are restoring life-supporting infrastructure in KEK such as electricity, water supply and gas. The KEK network including the mail system and the Web site, http://www.kek.jp, were recovered. We are under nation wide shortage of electrical power, and we must endure severe restrictions on the utilization of electricity.

Some buildings and facilities in both campuses are damaged. We start recovering efforts after investigating detailed status and safety check.

We will update the announcement as much as possible as we learn the detail of the entire damage. Our first priority is to restore the facility and reopen the lab. We sincerely appreciate your understandings and cooperation.
