High school students learn how to discover new particles

A B-Lab practice class was held at KEK for 16 high school students of Sano Nihon University high school (one of super science high schools) on November 22 (Sat). B-Lab is a program to discover new particles based on the real exprimental data obtained at KEK B-factory. Sano Nihon University high school is one of SSH, "Super Science High Schools", on which the Japanese ministry MEXT places special priority on science and math education.

In the morning the students took a course in elementary particles and particle experiments and then visited the Belle experimental facility and the KEKB accelerator. In the afternoon the students practiced the B-Lab program and learned how new particles are searched for. The students had already taken an introductory course in B-Lab at the high school and so the B-Lab practice was performed smoothly.

The B-Lab practice class for this school has been held three times and the first one was held at the high school in 2007 and the seconnd one was held at KEK on Feb. 23 in 2008.
