A completion ceremony for High Intensity Total Diffractometer, or NOVA, was held at the Ibaraki Quantum Beam Research Center on Tokai campus on June 2.
NOVA had been constructed in collaboration with JAEA, Kyoto University, Yamagata University, Fukuoka University, Kyushu University, Niigata University and KEK, and is funded by a NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) project, Advanced Fundamental Research on Hydrogen Storage Materials (Hydro Star). The purpose of Hydro Star is to facilitate the creation of a hydrogen energy-based society by conducting fundamental researches on hydrogen storage mechanism in materials. The main purpose of NOVA project is to study hydrogen storage mechanism in atomic scale by utilizing high-sensitivity of neutron to hydrogen.
After the ceremony, about 70 participants including representatives of the press visited the MLF laboratory. The leader of the NOVA construction team, Prof. Otomo of the Institute of materials and structure science at KEK, showed them around and explained the NOVA hardware.
