Korean delegation visit KEK
8 Dec, 2011
A delegation from Korea, Drs. Kim Si-Joong, Park Byong-Kwon, Yoon Chang-Kook, and Eom Chi-Yong, visited KEK on November 29. Director General Atsuto Suzuki, Trustees Fumihiko Takasaki and Osamu Shimomura welcomed the delegation. The meeting started with each of participants introducing themselves in turn. Numerous overseas researchers visit KEK every year, and KEK users from Korea constituted the largest group in JFY 2010 and 2011.
Suzuki briefly explained current research activities at KEK and J-PARC, and described KEK’s role in promoting Japanese high-energy physics research and related activities as an inter-university research institute corporation. The Korean delegation was interested in how to organize and cooperate with universities and research institutes.
Takasaki gave a brief summary of the 18th Asian Committee for Future Accelerators (ACFA) meeting held in Shanghai on November 24. He expressed his admiration for Korea due to that country’s active promotion of accelerator-based science and initiation of many new projects involving international collaboration.
The delegation toured the KEK Tsukuba campus, visiting the Belle experiment, Photon Factory, KEK Users Office and KEK dormitory. After enjoying lunch with KEK staff, the delegation also visited the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF), Hadron Experiment Hall, T2K experiment, J-PARC Users Office and Center for Korean J-PARC users (CKorJ-PARC) at the Tokai campus.
