The 22nd KEK Concert features classical recorder performance as well as straw-pipe performance of Tohru Kamiya. Mr. Kamiya has recently won popular acclaim for his unique straw-pipe performance, in addition to his highly esteemed classical recorder playing. It was Kamiya's invention to make fun and sophisticated musical instruments out of ordinary straws. Yes, the straw that you use to drink soda-pop. The unusual sound effects and amusing movements of his instruments are truly impressive. The concert promises to introduce you to a completely new world of musical entertainment.

Tohru Kamiya

Mr. Kamiya graduated from the University of Kyoto in 1973, majoring astrophysics. He started playing the recorder as a student, and went on to pursue a teaching and performance career with Baroque music as his major repertoire. He has traveled to Germany and USA for concert tours as a member of the Telemann Chamber Orchestra. In addition to his recorder performance activities, he has become famous as the straw-pipe player. He has invented a unique family of musical instruments with unusual charm, which has attracted wide attention in the public media. He has appeared in several Japanese television programs. Recently his straw-pipe concert activities have been extending internationally to Germany, U.S.A., Korea, China, and Britain.

Mr. Kamiya received the 1998 prize of the Campaign for Warm-heartedness. He plays the recorder in the Telemann Chamber Orchestra. Lecturer, Osaka College of Music.



All concerts in the series are open to the public and admission free. We may however restrict the number of attendants due to the limited seating capacity of the hall.
