WALTA (Washington Area Large-scale Time coincidence Array) is a project to investigate the highest energy cosmic rays, with the participation of middle and high school students and teachers throughout the Seattle area. By bringing the study of extremely high-energy cosmic rays into high school classrooms, WALTA will help answer fundamental open questions about cosmic rays, regarding their nature and origins. Students and teachers
participate in setting up, operating, and maintaining particle detectors, as well as data analysis. These activities provide many opportunities for
motivating learning in physics, math, and computer applications. University faculty and students are actively engaged in working with the schools, to help integrate the opportunities provided by this project with
the normal requirements and goals of the school curriculum. Similar projects around the USA and Canada will also be described.
