アブストラクト: The $B$-factory data for the $B\to\pi\pi,\pi K$ branching ratios exhibit puzzling patterns. Following a recently proposed strategy, we show that the $B\to\pi\pi$ hierarchy can be accommodated in the Standard Model through large non-factorizable effects. On the other hand, the ``$B\to\pi K$ puzzle'' may indicate new physics in the electroweak penguin sector. Should this actually be the case, we expect a strong interplay with rare decays, leading to deviations from the picture of the Standard Model in several decays, with the most spectacular effects in $K_{\rm L}\to \pi^0 \nu\bar\nu$ and $B_{s,d}\to\mu^+\mu^-$. We confront this strategy with the most recent experimental developments, addressing also the direct CP violation in $B_d\to\pi^\mp K^\pm$, which is now an established effect, and the first results for the direct CP asymmetry of $B_d\to\pi^0\pi^0$ that turn out to be in agreement with our predictions. Moreover, we arrive at an allowed region for the unitarity triangle in perfect accordance with the Standard Model. The ``$B\to\pi K$ puzzle'' persists with the new data, and can still be explained through new physics in the electroweak penguin sector. In fact, certain shifts of the $B\to\pi K$ observables were actually predicted on the basis of constraints from rare decays. Papers: A.J. Buras, R. Fleischer, S. Recksiegel and F. Schwab, Phys. Rev.
