The 2nd Workshop on FEL Science: “Emerging X-ray Applications in Biological Systems”

From December 6~8, 2009, a location residing in the scenery ocean front of southern Taiwan and topics of the advanced research using Free Electron Laser (FEL) science came together to create a fusion of leading Asian biology think-tanks in the workshop of “merging X-ray applications in biological systems”. The workshop is organized by the Japan XFEL and Song IRU of RIKEN, led by Dr. Testuya Ishikawa, director of RIKEN Spring-8, and Dr. Changyong Song of Song Initiative Research Unit (SIRU), with local support provided by the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC), Taiwan.

Such event brought together researchers from a wide spectrum of areas aiming to brainstorm new possible frontiers via utilization of coherent intense X-rays. Besides several focus session on X-ray sources and perspectives, three main sessions were drawn in the programs, structural biology, X-ray imaging and XFEL applications. Each main session was coordinated by a discussion chairman, with whom an overview was addressed to the audience, and ended with a panel discussion.

The participants spent their first day visiting the NSRRC facility, a synchrotron radiation light source, and continued heading down south to the Caesar Park Hotel in Kenting where the actual workshop took place. Following keynote given by Dr. T. Ishikawa, speakers offered insight of their research. Details of presentations, please visit the website: http://xfeluser.riken.jp/general-e/taiwan_WS.html
