The 6th Asia-Oceania Forum for Synchrotron Radiation Research (AOFSRR) was held from August 8 to 12, at the Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand. It was hosted by the Synchrotron Light Research Institute (SLRI) and was held jointly with the 4th SLRI Annual User Meeting.
The objective of the AOFSRR is to promote regional collaboration and scientific advancement in synchrotron radiation research and related subjects in Asia and Oceania.
The AOFSRR is held yearly to bring together scientists working in fields related to synchrotron sciences and accelerator-based research in order to facilitate discussions on current scientific advancement. The forum covers a wide range of topics related to synchrotron science and light sources.
In view of the increased activities related to synchrotron facility development and synchrotron radiation research in the Asia-Oceania region, the AOFSRR was established in November 2006 at KEK, Tsukuba, Japan. Currently, the AOFSRR includes eight regional members, each having its own synchrotron facilities in operation (Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand), and three associate members (New Zealand, Malaysia, and Vietnam). The first workshop was held in Tsukuba in November 2006; the second, in Hsinchu in 2007; the third, in Melbourne in 2008; the forth, in Shanghai in 2009; the fifth, in Pohang in 2010; and the sixth, in Bangkok in 2012.
Due to difficult circumstances related to the flooding in Thailand in 2011, the 6th AOFSRR had been postponed. Local Thai organizing members strongly felt that this meeting would be closed successfully. It was an excellent meeting, hosted with warm hospitality, and the participants enjoyed Thailand as the Land of Smiles. Participants understand that the annual workshop serve the purpose of promoting communication among synchrotron researchers, promoting collaboration among synchrotron facilities, and nurturing the young generation of synchrotron users in the Asia-Oceania region.
