On December 12 and 13, five representatives from the Institute of High Energy Physics Chinese Academy of Science (IHEP) including Wang Yifang, IHEP director, and Cheng Hesheng, the former director of the laboratory, visited KEK to discuss the ongoing collaboration between the two laboratories.
IHEP and KEK have been meeting regularly for over a decade, and the focal point of this meeting was the future direction of the collaboration, particularly with regard to accelerator R&D and research in the fields of particle physics and material sciences.
At KEK, construction to upgrade the accelerator for the laboratory’s new project, SuperKEKB, is underway, and about 15 Chinese scientists are participating in the Belle II collaboration, the international experimental group involved in the SuperKEKB project. At the meeting, one of the participating scientists in the Belle II collaboration gave a presentation on the Chinese contribution. They also discussed the R&D collaboration for the energy recovery linac (ERL) and the International Linear Collider (ILC).
Currently, Chinese institutions are embarking on research and development of new accelerator components and infrastructure. These include the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment, the Beijing Electron Positron Collider II (BEPC II), and China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). The IHEP delegation expressed their hope that KEK would cooperate more closely to support China’s accelerator-related activities.
They also visited J-PARC on the second day of the meeting and went on a facility tour. During this time, there was a frank exchange of views on a wide range of issues related to the projects at this facility.
