School for Accelerator Technology and Applications held in India

February 9, 2012

The School for Accelerator Technology and Applications was held at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Mumbai, India, from January 30 to February 3. This school aimed to encourage students to study accelerator-based science and gave the latest information on accelerators to Indian researchers working in the field.

This school was open for all students in their bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral courses in science and technologies, who are interested in accelerator physics and technology. Approximately 100 students attended the school, and many students took the online classes. Eminent researchers from different parts of the world, including seven scientists from KEK, lectured on the on-going hi-tech research.

The school led by Prof. Raghava Varma from IIT Bombay, was hosted by IIT Bombay, with support from International Linear Collider (ILC) Working Group (India) and the Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering & Research (SAMEER), Mumbai.

Many groups in India are now actively pursuing research activities in the field of accelerator science. “Indian students are eager to study accelerator-related science. We believe that they will lead India towards a bright future,” said Dr. Tanuja Dixit from SAMEER, a member of the local organizing committee, who studied at KEK and received her PhD from the Graduate University for Advanced Study (Sokendai), Tsukuba, Japan. Another local organizer, Dr. Abhay Deshpande from SAMEER, who is also a graduate from Sokendai, said, “It was really nice to reunite and work with my former supervisor at Sokendai in India. We look forward to collaborating in many aspects and achieving success in our research activities.”
