Duo Twins 

  Twin brothers Ken-ichi Nishiyama (Cello) and Shinji Nishiyama (Contrabass) organized "Duo Twins" for performance in Nagano city, their hometown, when they were college students at the Tokyo University of the Arts.
  After they became a members of the NHK Symphony Orchestra, they have held concerts in many cities such as Tokyo, Nagano, Morioka, Nara, Kanazawa and Fukui. The concert in Ichikawa city was broadcasted on radio.
  Although original repertoire for duo by cello and contrabass is quite limited, they will continuously find attractive potential of the duo style by introducing many pieces from classical to modern. They also aim to give people opportunities to get familiar with music since they believe it is indispensable for our daily lives.



Ken-ichi Nishiyama – Cello

  Ken-ichi Nishiyama, from Nagano prefecture, started the cello when he joined string ensemble club at junior high school. He graduated Tokyo University of the Arts with acanthus prize. He passed the audition of NHK Symphony Orchestra in 2003 when he was a graduate student. He has studied with Fumiaki Kono, Tomoya Kikuchi and Martin Löhr. He also studied in Berlin as a dispatch of Affinis Cultural Foundation for one year from September 2005.
  He currently performs as a member of Schaffen Trio and Duo Twins, as well as a Vice Principal cellist of the NHK Symphony Orchestra.

 

Shinji Nishiyama – Contrabass

  Shinji Nishiyama, from Nagano prefecture, started the contrabass when he joined string ensemble club at junior high school. He graduated Tokyo University of the Arts with Ataka prize and Acanthus prize. He was 3rd prize winner in the 9th Takarazuka Vega Music Competition, and 1st prize winner in the 2nd YBP International Competition. He has studied with Yoshio Nagashima, Naofumi Nishida and Shigeru Ishikawa. He joined the NHK Symphony Orchestra in April 2003.
  He is currently an Acting Principal of Contrabass in the NHK Symphony Orchestra and also performs in Chamber Orchestra ARCUS, Duo Twins with his brother Ken-ichi Nishiyama. He is a part-time lecturer at Tokyo University of the Arts.
