アブストラクト: We report on a new generation of precision measurements of the lifetime of negative muons in hydrogen and of free positive muons at PSI. The first experiment will determine the rate of the basic charged-current reaction with 1% precision and, thus, the pseudoscalar form-factor of the nucleon. This will provide a stringent test of recent accurate QCD predictions based on Standard Model symmetries. The related capture reaction in deuterium appears promising to calibrate the solar pp fusion process under terrestrial conditions. The goal of the second experiment is a 1 ppm measurement of the lifetime which represents a factor of 20 improvement over the current world average. This measurement determines the Fermi Coupling Constant one of the fundamental electroweak couplings of nature.
