We review the theoretical status of the radiative, semileptonic, and
leptonic rare B decays in the standard model and in some popular
variants of supersymmetry. The interest in studying rare B decays
as precision tools in flavor physics will be the focus of this talk. In
the context of the standard model, measurements of rare B decays at the
B-factories will determine precisely the CKM matrix elements. However,
their precision measurements may turn out to be harbinger of new
physics. This will be illustrated in the context of supersymmetry.
