PHENIX experiment at RHIC studies nucleus-nucleus
collisions at very high energies. In these collisions, it is expected that plasma of
deconfined quark and gluons is formed.
PHENIX experiment collected data in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=130 GeV in year 2000 run and at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV in year 2001 run. Initial results have already stablished many characteristics of nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC energies. The measurements of total multiplicity and total transverse energy show that particle production increases more rapidly than number of participating nucleons. Results in soft hadron production can be well described by thermal models with collective expansion. The observation of strong elliptic flow suggests a fast thermalization of the system. The observation of a strong suppression of high transverse momentum particles suggests that quarks and gluons
suffer significant energy loss in the high density matter created in the collision. First results of open charm production and J/PSI production
at RHIC energy have been obtained.
I will give a brief overview of the RHIC program and physics of nucleus-nucleus collisions, and I will present the results from PHENIX experiments and their interpretations.
