A neutron wave is confined in a material bottle at very low energy, although the size of the neutron is very small compared with an interatomic
distance in the material. The nuclear force becomes repulsive for long wavelength neutrons as a result of a quantum effect on the surface of the nucleus. Because of this effect, neutrons with energies below a critical energy, which are defined as ultracold neutrons (UCN), are completely reflected
from a material surface and then confined in a material bottle. Confined neutrons can be used for precision experiments on the space and time reversal, neutron lifetime, n-nbar oscillation and gravity. High UCN density is highly desirable for the development of theses experiments. A new generation UCN source was established for innovation in UCN density. The UCN production and physics of UCN will be discussed. |
