An introduction to the special problems that are encountered in a treatment of HQET beyond perturbation theory is given. In particular, we explain how HQET can be implemented on the lattice including the non-perturbative matching of the effective theory to QCD by imposing suitable matching conditions in finite volume, and we report on a recent test of HQET as an effective theory for QCD. As applications, we discuss a quenched lattice computation of the b-quark mass and of the B-meson decay constant to leading order in HQET, where the involved renormalization problems are solved non-perturbatively and the continuum limit is taken.
