For NNLO calculations for the LHC one needs NNLO parton distribution functions. Till recently an important component for such PDF's was missing: the three loop DIS splitting functions. In the first part of the talk I will describe what are the ingredients that were needed for their calculation. When the outcome of the calculation is studied in the second part of the talk, one finds a number of interesting features, ranging from a mysterious relation to unexpected contributions to leading log terms. The qualitity of leading log approaches is discussed. Some attention will be given to the stability of the series and to scale invariance. If time permits I will also show some results of the computation of the three loop coefficien functions which form the dominant part of the NNNLO.
