アブストラクト: Quantum fields can be studied not only on flat Minkowski space, but also on general curved spacetime manifolds. Although gravity itself is treated classically, this theory incorporates some key aspects of general relativity and thereby should provide a more fundamental base for quantum field theory. Applications of this theory include the study of Hawking radiation, density/gravitational perturbations in expanding universes, "quantum inequalities", and more. Over the past decade, considerable progress has been made in the theoretical understanding how to formulate self-interacting models on generic Lorentizan spacetimes, including a systematic understanding of the renormalization problem. The main tools have turned out the be a suitable version of the Wilson/Zimmermann Operator Product Expansion adaped to curved space, and mathematical tools from a theory called "microlocal analysis", which was developed first by the famous mathematician M. Sato and his school in Japan, and later also by others. The talk is of an introductory nature and aimed at non-experts, and the main focus is on the ideas.
