TITLE: New approach to numerically solve microwave instability of the beam
SPEAKER: G. Stupakov  (SLAC)
LANGUAGE: English
ABSTRACT: Analysis of the microwave beam instability is an important part of an accelerator design. In the design phase, one is mostly interested in the threshold current of the instability. Additional information can be also obtained from the knowledge of the growth rate above the threshold. In this talk I advocate that these parameters can be found from solution of a linearized Vlasov equation in the vicinity of the equilibrium state of the beam. I will first demonstrate the linearized Vlasov (LV) approach for a simple solvable case of a coasting beam. I will then present a numerical algorithm and compare analytical and numerical solutions for particular case of the broadband resonant impedance. Finally, I will show an example of solving microwave instability for a bunched beam and discuss challenges of the new approach.
