ABSTRACT: The development of high performance silicon pixel detectors at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) for demanding applications in High Energy Physics experiments has created very interesting spin-off applications that are extremely useful in other fields of science. Starting with the development of the pixel detector for the CMS experiment at the LHC accelerator it is shown how this advanced detector technology has been carried over into the field of photon science. The presentation will also describe the design requirements and the current performance of the CMS pixel detector and how this is related to the parameters for a successful pixel system for photon science. In the case of the PILATUS pixel system, this is illustrated for its application in protein crystallography. An outlook is given of the new developments at the Paul Scherrer Institute for next generation advanced pixel detectors.
