ABSTRACT: Japanese people have been using bamboos in everyday life for many years. Therefore, bamboo forests have always been managed by farmers who made profit from bamboos. However, lately, the number of neglected bamboo forests which have not been cared properly by the aging and reducing numbers of farmers, has increased. Neglected bamboo forests become natural woodlands where other plants can hardly grow in the soil below the bamboos. Water from forest falls and rain water flow into the residential areas around the woodlands. Since the roots of bamboos are shallow, there is every possibility for the bamboo clumps to collapse if a crack develops in the slope during heavy rain. In addition, the health of other plants in such forests becomes poor due to low light intensity. Thus, the inside of neglected bamboo forests will remain as a problem area in respect of biodiversity.
