ABSTRACT: This is the 50th celebration year since the 1st Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE) team started Japan in 1956 by Japanese 1st ice-breaker vessel ¡ÈSoya¡É, landed on the East-Ongul Island in Antarctica, and settled the ¡ÈSyowa Station¡É. ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡This talk covers several JARE¡Çs scientific achievements, such as, discovery of ozone hole (1984), discovery of many meteors including those from the moon and Mars, and ice core project in Dome-Fuji Station which can reconstruct ancient earth¡Çs atmospheric environment back to one million years ago. Recently, Antarctica is regarded as a suitable place to monitor the earth¡Çs environment because it is the most remote area from human¡Çs activity. The speaker will participate in this year¡Çs 48th JARE to participate in the International Polar Year 2007-2008¡Çs measurement in Syowa Station. Future observational targets in Antarctica as well as beautiful nature such as auroras and other natural phenomena will be shown in this talk.
