ABSTRACT: Europe has been progressively capable of realizing ambitious programs in astronomy, mostly thanks to the creation, 50 years ago, of two organizations, ESO and ESA. ESO, the European Southern Observatory, is dedicated to astronomy from the ground. ESO has established 2 observatories in Chile, La Silla and Paranal, and is running a third, ALMA, in collaboration with North America and East Asia. ESA, the European Space Agency, has launched many very successful space missions devoted to astronomy, and steadily continues to deploy its program, called ¡ÈCosmic Vision.¡É I will talk about some of the instruments or missions just starting to operate and yield results, and of the future plans, emphasizing the scientific aims.
