ABSTRACT: Fifteen years after the submission of Express of Interest in 1992, the CMS detector is being built and installed in the collision hall one hundred meters underground at CERN. Commissioning of the detector is now in full swing. The detector will be closed for data taking in spring 2008. I will start this talk with explaining the original concept of design and construction of the CMS experiment, followed by the status of installation and commissioning of the detector. Then I will discuss CMS preparations for early LHC physics.
