ABSTRACT: I discuss recent advances in understanding the heavy-quark/large-energy limit for heavy B meson decays into energetic light hadrons, where the heavy-quark and large-energy limits give rise to new symmetries. The soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) systematizes the description of hard exclusive processes, and can be used to discuss issues such as factorization and renormalization in the language of effective field theory. As applications, I consider semileptonic B->pi l nu and radiative B->K* gamma decays. Related papers: hep-ph/0503263, hep-ph/0411073
