ABSTRACT: The classical sine-Gordon model permits integrable, purely transmitting discontinuities, or jump-defects, where the conditions relating the fields on either side of a defect are Baecklund transformations frozen at the defect location. In this talk I will provide a classical picture of the problem and subsequently I will show to what extent it is possible to translate the classical features of the jump-defect into its corresponding quantum version. In particular two types of defects are found. One type, carrying even topological charge, is stable, but the other type, carrying odd topological charge, is unstable and may be considered as a resonant bound state of a soliton and a stable defect. Some remarks will be made with regards to the possibility of the jump-defects to move. Finally, I will show, classically, how a jump-defect can also be incorporated into a non-relativistic models, such as the nonlinear Schroedinger, without spoiling integrability.
