ABSTRACT: A solid understanding of the theoretical framework and its phenomenological inputs has been crucial for the success of perturbative QCD in the past and continues to be vital for ongoing and future nuclear and high-energy research programs. Taking RHIC as a particular example, I will outline how precision measurements in proton-proton collisions will further our understanding of QCD hard interactions, the structure of the nucleon, and the hadronization process. I will give a synopsis of the main theoretical concepts, illustrate the importance of higher-order QCD corrections, and highlight the role gluons play in explaining the spin of the proton and the production of hadrons.
