ABSTRACT: If one tries to use string theory to understand particle physics better, it is impossible to avoid a question how quarks and leptons are described in string theory. Most of other questions such as SUSY flavor problem or how chaotic inflation reheats the universe can be addressed only after the Standard Model particles are identified in geometric language in string theory compactifications. F-theory is one of dual formulations of string theory, and covers a class of string vacua that are interesting from phenomenological perspectives. In this talk, we begin with an explanation why F-theory is interesting. Surprisingly, though, string theory community has not succeeded in identifying the Standard Model particles in F-theory language so far. In the latter half of this talk, we will present mathematical descriptions of chiral matter multiplets in F-theory, which will be indispensable for further study of phenomenology in F-theory.
