ABSTRACT: We assert, contrary to a common belief, that canonical ensembles with finite number of physical degrees can manifest discontinuous phase transitions featuring a genuine mathematical singularity, provided we keep not volume but pressure constant. As a concrete model, we reconsider a famous elementary system, ideal Bose gas: For exact yet complicated expressions of various thermodynamic quantities in canonical ensemble, we perform numerical computations up to the number of particles one million. We report that a first-order phase transition does emerge if the number of particles is equal to or greater than 7616.
