ABSTRACT: |
The origin of the observed dark energy could be explained entirely within the standard model, with no new fields required. I will review the ideas underlying the appearance of the Veneziano ghost oflow-energy QCD and show how nontrivial spacetimes (compact topologies and time-dependent background) give rise to interesting new effects such as Casimir energies and gravitational production of unphysical states. I will then discuss the cosmological applications of such effects (dark energy, generation of primordial magnetic fields) and the possible many ways for this proposal to be tested. |
