Radiation monitoring at KEK

KEK routinely measures the surrounding radiation level as a part of our safety management activity. We have been measuring radiation in the Tsukuba area since 14 March. The measurement results are provided on this page.

Measurement result of airborne nuclide and air radiation level in Tsukuba area

KEK, in conjunction with National Institute for Environmental Study (NIES) have been conducting the measurement to assess the airborne nuclide and air radiation level in Tsukuba area since 15 March.

Dose rate at KEK in Tsukuba

KEK is providing real-time dose rate information obtained by the measurements using the Geiger-Mueller counter set up at KEK (165km from Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant).

Measurement result from 14 to 16 March are provided below.

Radiation monitoring at KEK

Ambient radiation level monitored by KEK monitoring system (Geiger-Muller counter). The data is from 5am March 16. Horizontal axis is time, vertical axis is the radiation in micro Sievert per hour. (Full scale is 0.9 micro Sievert per hour) Average radiation is displayed on the top right corner, which corresponds to 0.3323 micro Sievert per hour.

Radiation monitoring at KEK

The maximum value reported at 8:40 am was around 1.1µSv/h after our recalibration. The graph shows the data until 13:35, March 15. KEK will continue providing data on this web site and to the city of Tsukuba. (with NaI counter)

March 15, 12:00

KEK routinely measures the surrounding radiation level. All accelerators and experimental devices were stopped safely at the time of first earthquake shake on March 11. We have confirmed the radiation safety, and no hazard to the environment has been reported.

On March 15 (Thu), the radiation level measured at KEK raised, which indicates the effects of the Fukushima nuclear power plants.

The monitored radiation level at KEK value was between 0.3 to 1.3µSv/h. The maximum level was reported around the 8:40 am. This (1.3µSv/h) is about 10 times higher to the natural radiation level, which we consider no immediate threat to our health.

We will continue the monitoring and keep this web site updated.
