Regarding the new coronavirus.
Health authorities in China say the number of people diagnosed with pneumonia caused by the new coronavirus has risen
to 2,744 in the country.
The National Health Commission says the number of confirmed cases jumped by 769 on Sunday, and the death toll increased
by 24 to 80.
The 24 new deaths were reported in Hubei Province. Its capital city, Wuhan, is the epicenter of the outbreak.
The commission says patients have now been found in almost the entire country. A total of 461 are reportedly in serious
condition.
The Chinese government has announced that the Lunar New Year holiday period will be extended by three days to February 2.
Officials say the step is intended to restrict public gatherings and contain infections.
Beijing has taken other steps to restrict the movement of people. Travel agencies halted group tours to overseas
destinations on Monday.
Long-distance bus services have been suspended in many places.
It remains unclear how effective these steps will prove in stemming the spread of the virus. China's health authorities
say the new strain of coronavirus is becoming more contagious.
