研究業績概要

 東大理学系大学院修士課程において原子核実験ことに核磁気モーメントの測定や、原子核スピンをプローブとする核物性の実験を志し、そのための電子回路、計算機によるデーター解析、ガンマー線検出器などの基礎的実験技術を学んだ。
 博士課程の一年の時西ベルリン自由大学の物理教室の研究員かつ大学院生として渡独し、リーゲル博士のもとで、ハーン・マイトナー研究所のヴァン・デ・グラフ加速器を用いた原子核を探子(プローブ)として物性を探る核物性の実験を主なテーマとして研究を続けた。
まず原子核反応で作ることの出来る長寿命の励起状態を発見すること、また物性的に興味ある標的からすでに知られている長寿命の原子核励起状態(とりわけ核スピンが核整列した状態)を作る核反応を見つけることが重要であった。ガンマー線を用いたビーム角度相関法(In Beam Perturbed Angular Correlation) により113Sn、114Sb、205Poなどのマイクロ秒ーミリ秒の励起状態の核モーメントを測定した。
 これらの原子核励起状態をもちいて特に金属液体、液体半導体、イオン溶液などの媒体中での不純物(原子核反応生成物)のナイトのシフト、磁気緩和機構および電気四重極相互作用から来る緩和機構を研究し電場勾配の動的振る舞いの解明を行った。
1980年に帰朝しKEKブースター利用施設の中間子実験室の建設をつぶさに見、パルスミュオンビーム初取り出しの感激を共にすることができた。それ以来パルス状ミュオン実験法の開発に取り組んできた。
 実験としてはNiの強磁性転移の臨界現象等磁性研究を主なテーマとし、稀釈冷凍機のミュエスアールへの応用、高周波ミュオンスピン共鳴法の開発とその応用、超伝導ヘルムホルツコイルによる高周波空胴を用いた500 Mhz共鳴の開発と負ミュオン化学反応への応用をおこなってきた。一方カナダトライアムフ研究所で準位交差法のミュエスアールへの応用といった新しい手法を共同して開発した。またトライアムフ研究所のおいて超伝導ソレノイドを用いた直流状大強度負ミュオンチャネルの建設を行い、酸素に捕獲されたミュオン原子による高温超伝導体の研究を行って来た。特に酸素の位置の違いによるミュオン原子のパラ磁性シフトの異方性や異常な温度変化を発見した。
 ミュオニウムの四重極相互作用の研究において水晶を試料として温度変化のみならず初めて一軸性圧力を導入し格子定数の変化とと電場勾配の関係を明らかにした。さらに多くの強誘電体においてミュオニウムの四重極相互作用が発現していることを示した。稀釈冷凍機を用いた有機磁性体の研究などを行った。
