On 24 July, the kick-off meeting of the Asia-Europe Physics Summit (ASEPS) took place at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, China. ASEPS is scheduled to be held in Tsukuba, Japan from 24 to 26 March 2010, aiming to strengthen the cooperation in physics research between European and Asian countries. “A balanced partnership between Europe, Asia and America is crucial for any worldwide endeavor in the field of science and technology”, said Mitsuaki Nozaki of KEK, one of the two chairs of ASEPS organizing committee. The summit is a place to discuss common issues arising international collaborations between Asia and Europe in the various physics programs,
ASEPS is set to discuss the common scientific interests of European and Asian countries in various research fields including large-scale infrastructures, to set up a dedicated framework that would enhance Euro-Asia collaborations in physics aiming for the next 15-20 years, and to address issues to overcome in the involvement of developing countries in basic research activities.
In this context, 40 representatives from 13 countries and regions participated in the meeting, 21 at the site and others through the internet conference system. In the kick-off meeting, they discussed on the structure of the March summit and a launch of preparatory working groups.
