2. Current condition

KEK has established earthquake emergency response team (head: Director General) on 11 March in response to the occurrence of the biggest earthquake ever Japan has experienced in our history. All accelerators and experimental devices were stopped the operation immediately after the first shake. We have confirmed the radiation safety, and no hazard to the environment has been reported. Also there are no reports of casualties on both Tsukuba and Tokai campuses.

Some damages to the buildings and facilities at Tsukuba campus have been identified. Tokai campus has avoided the damages from Tsunami tidal wave, but serious damages from earthquake are anticipated. We will start the detail investigation of the facilities this week.

Access to all the buildings and facilities at J-PARC is prohibited. No entrance to the premise will be allowed unless permissions granted by the Division Heads.

Tokai-1-go-kan and Tokai dormitory are accessible, and you can enter into the buildings. However, some part of the building sustained some damages. Please stay away from the places appeared to be dangerous.

3. Status of the recovery in KEK

In Tsukuba, restoration work on the Linac and two photon factory facilities is planned. It is our hope that from Fall we can begin some degree of normal operation and conduct experiments in parallel with making adjustments to the accelerators. We are making concerted efforts to ensure that construction of SuperKEKB remains on schedule. Activities related to international collaboration on the advanced accelerator technologies of International Linear Collider (ILC) and Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) will resume. In J-PARC, damage evaluation and repair/reconstruction of accelerators, detectors, buildings and equipment will be completed by December at the latest. At that point, commissioning for all systems will take place.
The recovery schedules for Tsukuba and Tokai are shown below.

4. KEK's Effort to Save Energy

To deal with expected power shortage this summer, KEK is stepping up efforts to save energy as follows:

  1. KEK limits its maximum power consumption targeting to 16,800KW(16.8MW). This limitation applies between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m, from 21 July to 30 September 2011, excluding for weekends and holidays. The power usage less than this limit
  2. Power consumption alarm announcement will be broadcasted through KEK campus when the power consumption exceeds 18,000 KW (18MW). This measure will be taken between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. from 21 June to 22 September 2011, excluding weekends and holidays.
  3. When the power consumption exceeds the alarming level of 18,000 KW, following measures will be taken:
    • 1) The main voltage sources for all experiment systems will be shut down during the peak hours.
    • 2) Air conditioning at the experiment facilities such as KEKB tunnel, AR tunnel and linac tunnel will be turned off.
  4. Energy saving efforts at KEK
    • 1) Turn off the lighting equipments in the office when sufficient outside light is available.
    • 2) Limit the use of office equipments such as computers, printers or copier to the minimum necessary level.
    • 3) Avoid excessive use of electric appliances such as refrigerators or electrical pot, and maintain them properly.
    • 4) Dress in "Cool Biz", an energy-saving dress code to wear short-sleeved shirts or polo shirts without jackets or ties to save electricity on air conditioning.
    • 5) Set the air conditioner temperature at 28 degree C.
    • 6) Avoid the usage of the elevators when possible.
  5. Energy saving tips at home
    • 1) Set the air conditioner temperature at 28 degree C.
    • 2) Use electrical fans instead of air conditioner.
    • 3) Always turn off the lights when you leave a room.
    • 4) Close your curtains or blinds to stop heat coming in through the windows and doors.
    • 5) Don't leave appliances on standby.
    • 6) Stop wasting water. The water companies have to use energy to supply mains water to our homes.
    • 7) Invest in some Energy Saving Recommended products and Energy Saving Recommended lighting.
