ITER
Originally an acronym for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. The present objective is to harness nuclear fusion energy for peaceful use. ITER is an international research project joined by China, the EU, India, Japan, Korea, Russia and the USA. ITER is currently under construction at Cadarache in France.
ITER is a joint international research and development project that aims to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility of the anticipated nuclear fusion energy as an inexhaustible and environmentally benign energy source, and is the largest international scientific project next to the International Space Station (ISS). The multi-national ‘Agreement on the Establishment of the ITER International Fusion Energy Organization for the joint Implementation of the ITER Project’ was signed in 2006, and foresees 10 years of construction and 20 years of operation. ITER was originally an acronym for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, but was dropped to mean the International Fusion Energy Organization to be established in France.
