The Open Campus during Science and Technology Week
On April 19, the Open Campus during Science and Technology Week was held at KEK Tsukuba Campus. Blessed with good weather, the event welcomed 427 visitors. The Cryogenics Science Center demonstrated a “Superconducting Coaster”. When a superconducting bulk cooled with liquid nitrogen is put on a rail lined with permanent magnets, it levitates and remains suspended— even if it is turned upside down. Visitors had the opportunity to see and experience this fascinating phenomenon firsthand, which is made possible by such a unique property of superconductors.
