Young Investigator Presentation Award Received at the 63rd Annual Meeting on Radioisotopes and Radiation Researches
Mr. Kiyokazu Tsugane, Associate Engineer at the Radiation Science Center, received the Young Investigator Presentation Award at the 63rd Annual Meeting on Radioisotopes and Radiation Researches, held at Miraikan (The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation) in Tokyo from July 8 to 10, 2026. The award-winning presentation was titled “Large-Scale High-Resolution Mapping of Neutron and Photon Radiation Fields in High-Energy Electron Accelerator Facilities —Application to Radiation Damage Risk Assessment for LED Lighting Systems.”
The manufacture and import/export of fluorescent lamps will be banned by the end of 2027. In preparation for this change, KEK plans to introduce LED lighting in its large accelerator facilities. However, LED lighting is vulnerable to radiation, and photons and neutrons generated during accelerator operation may cause failures. To address this issue, photon and neutron radiation fields during accelerator operation were measured in detail, and the service life of LED lighting was quantitatively evaluated. Based on these results, this study proposed operational guidelines for the long-term and stable operation of LED lighting in accelerator facilities.
