“AI-Smart” Kick-off workshop

The "AI-Smart" Kickoff Workshop was held at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) on September 25-26, 2023.

The "AI-SMART x HEP Consortium (AI-Smart)" is a research exchange program led by the QUP Principal Investigator (PI) Prof. Yu Nakahama and supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) since April 2023 as a JSPS Core-to-Core Program (Advanced Research Networks).

The consortium aims to accelerate the implementation of AI technology and the development of "smart" research through international researcher exchanges and the training of young researchers. The group has defined four research targets in particle and astroparticle physics experiments, such as ATLAS, Belle II, and CMB experiments. They are physics analysis, accelerator control, detector development, and trigger data acquisition.

The kick-off workshop was organized by the consortium members at KEK, CERN, and SLAC. 52 researchers participated from 15 institutions in Germany, Japan, Switzerland, and the USA. There was a lively discussion and exchange of information, experience, and knowledge among experts in trigger data collection and accelerator control, in particular. In addition, on the second day, a tour of experimental facilities at KEK, such as the Belle II detector and the SuperKEKB accelerator, was also organized.

Yu Nakahama expressed her outlook for the future that we will continue to develop "smart" experiments across experiments over the next five years through international research exchanges.
