On Saturday, July 27, 2024, Suerfu Burkhant, assistant professor at the International Center for Quantum-field Measurement Systems for Studies of the Universe and Particles (WPI-QUP, KEK), delivered a lecture in Japanese at Lake Echo in Ibaraki Prefecture.

This lecture was part of the "2024 Ibaraki Prefecture High School Natural Science Summer Research Conference and Joint Observation Meeting," attended by approximately 170 high school students interested in the natural sciences from across Ibaraki Prefecture. Suerfu participated as a lecturer for the KEK Caravan.

The lecture, titled "Journeys to Know the Universe," began with a personal introduction from Suerfu, sharing his upbringing, hobbies, and laboratory environment through photographs. He also spoke about his passion for research, drawing parallels with his favorite books, which captivated the audience.

The lecture continued with an accessible explanation of the history of astronomy, from ancient naked-eye observations and predictions to the cutting-edge observation techniques using ultra-sensitive sensors that Suerfu is currently researching. The lecture also included tips on taking beautiful astrophotography and mini quizzes about astronomy, creating an engaging 70-minute session that brought the large audience together.

During the Q&A session, students asked questions about elementary particles related to the birth of the universe and the potential applications of their energy, reflecting the high level of interest and enthusiasm for space and particle research among the attendees.
