WPI-QUP Celebrates New Director and Opening of a New Research Building

At the International Center for Quantum-field Measurement Systems for Studies of the Universe and Particles (WPI-QUP), Dr. Toshiyuki Azuma has taken up the position of Director. To mark his appointment and the completion of the new research building, a ceremony titled “Inauguration of the New Director of WPI-QUP and Completion of the New Research Building” was held on March 14, 2026. The ceremony took place in the newly completed QUP building, with approximately 40 guests in attendance. These included representatives from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), members of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) WPI Program, the Mayor of Tsukuba City, presidents and executives of universities and research institutions, as well as representatives from partner organizations and construction companies.

In his opening remarks, KEK Director General Dr. Shoji Asai highlighted how KEK’s expertise in hardware development can be applied to quantum research. He also emphasized the role of QUP as a central pillar of KEK’s quantum research strategy, stating, “We aim to strengthen collaboration with research institutions and industry partners both within and beyond KEK to advance our quantum strategy.”

This was followed by congratulatory addresses from Mr. Keita Nakazawa, Director of the Basic and Fundamental Research Division at MEXT; Dr. Akira Ukawa, Program Director of the WPI Program at JSPS; Dr. Takashi Shimazu, President of Toyota Central R&D Labs., Inc.; and Mayor Tatsuo Igarashi of Tsukuba City.

Dr. Azuma then delivered his inaugural address and provided an overview of QUP’s research activities. He expressed his aspirations, stating, “As a core component of KEK’s quantum research strategy, QUP aims to play a vital role in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.”

After the ceremony, the event moved outdoors for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Participants included (from right) Director Azuma, President Nagata of SOKENDAI (The Graduate University for Advanced Studies), Program Director Ukawa, Mayor Igarashi, Director General Asai, Director Nakazawa, President Shimazu, President Nagata of the University of Tsukuba, President Koyasu of the National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology, and President Kitsuregawa of the Research Organization of Information and Systems.
