QUP × IPNS Synergy Workshop Held
On Wednesday, July 29, 2026, the International Center for Quantum-field Measurement Systems for Studies of the Universe and Particles (WPI-QUP) and the Institute of Particle and Nuclear Studies (IPNS) at KEK jointly held the “QUP × IPNS Synergy Workshop.” Approximately 70 participants — researchers, technical staff, and students from QUP and IPNS, both on-site and online — gathered at the WPI-QUP Building for a lively exchange of views on research collaboration and future cooperation between the two organizations.

The workshop was organized to explore possibilities for future research collaboration, joint technology development, and cooperation in the management of the two organizations. In Part 1, the topical presentation session, researchers from both organizations gave talks on their research fields and future outlook. In Part 2, the discussion session, participants exchanged views freely over a BBQ-style social gathering, deepening their understanding of opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration and of challenges shared by the two organizations.

The topical presentation session featured four talks, two each from QUP and IPNS: “Listening to Dark Waves: Light Dark Matter and High-Frequency Gravitational Waves,” “IPNS’s Considerations for the Future Research Pillars at the Tsukuba Campus,” “Synergy of Superconducting Quantum Technology and Accelerator Cavities: Global Trends and Future Prospects,” and “Perspectives on the Future of Semiconductor Detector Technology.” Each talk introduced the latest research developments and prompted active discussion of the new research opportunities that collaboration between QUP and IPNS could open up.
The discussion session was held in the outdoor space of the QUP Building. Some groups dug deeper into the themes raised in the presentations, while other participants exchanged ideas for new joint research projects. Interactions crossed the boundaries of affiliation, discipline, and generation, and lively conversations continued throughout in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
Tsutomu Mibe, QUP Deputy Director and Professor of IPNS, shared his outlook: “We organized this workshop to deepen the partnership between QUP and IPNS. It gave us valuable hints for further development through collaboration that draws on the strengths of both organizations. Building on these discussions, we hope to move forward to realize stronger collaborations.”
