First turns and successful storage of beams in the SuperKEKB electron and positron rings

After five years of large-scale upgrade work, SuperKEKB, an electron-positron colliding accelerator at KEK in Japan, has started test operations. SuperKEKB succeeded in circulating and storing beams in the electron and positron rings, which is the first milestone of its commissioning.

A visit of FALC members to Belle II

On February 24th, members of the Funding Agencies for Large Colliders (FALC) visited KEK and stopped by at the state-of-the-art Belle II detector now being constructed inside Tsukuba Hall.

Prof. Tom Browder of the University of Hawaii and the spokesperson of the Belle II experiment, Prof. Yoshihide Sakai and Prof. Yutaka Ushiroda of IPNS/KEK, led a tour around the Belle II detector and gave an overview of the current status of the experiment while showing the detectors, including the particle identification system, the tracker, and the vertex detectors in the midst of their construction.

Annual Visitors to Tsukuba Hall, the home of the Belle II detector, exceed 10,000.

This year, for the very first time, the number of visitors to Tsukuba Hall at KEK in Tsukuba, Japan and home of the Belle II detector designed, built and operated by an international collaboration of over 600 physicists from 23 countries, exceeded 10,000.

Founding Fathers of the B Factory Experiments Awarded Panofsky Prize

On October 5th, 2015, the American Physical Society awarded the 2016 W.K.H. Panofsky Prize in Experimental Particle Physics to Drs. Fumihiko Takasaki, Stephen Olsen, Jonathan Dorfan and David Hitlin, for “leadership in the BaBar and Belle experiments, which established the violation of CP symmetry in B meson decay, and furthered our understanding of quark mixing and quantum chromodynamics”. This is the highest award of the APS for experimental particle physics
