[Welcome to the IPNS] Interview with Dr. Yuki Yokokura of the Theory center

In October 2025, Dr. Yuki Yokokura joined the Theory Center at IPNS as an assistant professor.

We interviewed him about what sparked his interest in the world of particle physics, the research he has conducted, and how he refreshes his mind when faced with challenges in his work.

■What sparked your interest in particle physics?

I think it started with my childhood fascination with Doraemon’s time machine. Later, I saw the word “general relativity” somewhere, and in university, I learned it is related to particle physics.

■What kind of research were you involved in before coming to KEK?

After a postdoctoral fellowship at an institute in India, I worked at RIKEN iTHEMS. I have been studying quantum theory of black holes, linking quantum theory, general relativity, and thermodynamics.

■What kind of research do you hope to pursue at KEK?

I would like to continue pursuing the fundamental question: “What is spacetime?” I’m also interested in nurturing the next generation and contributing to the activities of international research hubs.

■Can you share your method of refreshing your mind when facing difficulties in research and work?

I enjoy cooking delicious meals or going out to eat, and spending time in nature (camping, cycling, fishing, etc.).

We look forward to your future activities at the IPNS!
