[Welcome to the IPNS] Interview with Dr. Yuta Okazaki of the Instrumentation Technology Development Center

In December 2023, Dr. Yuta Okazaki joined the Instrumentation Technology Development Center at IPNS as an assistant professor.

We interviewed him about what sparked his interest in the world of particle physics, the research he has conducted, and how he refreshes his mind when faced with challenges in his work.

■What sparked your interest in particle physics?

When I was in junior high school, I stumbled upon a novel featuring anti-matter and CERN. This sparked my curiosity about elementary particles. This interest deepened as I delved into science magazines. I gradually became fascinated to explore the mysteries of the origin of the universe, yet-unknown laws of physics and new particles.

■What kind of research were you involved in before coming to KEK?

As a student, I joined the LHC/ATLAS experiment at CERN, operating the data acquisition system for Run-2 and searching for new particles. I also played a role in developing a new circuit board and the data acquisition system for Run-3.
Upon completing my doctoral studies, I joined the muon g-2/EDM experimental group, which is planned to take place at J-PARC in 2028. In this role, I contribute to developing new circuit boards for data acquisition and establishing a comprehensive data acquisition system.

■What kind of research do you hope to pursue at KEK?

I aim to collaborate with various experimental groups both in and outside KEK to advance the development of new detectors customized for the needs of future particle experiments. My primary focus will be on the development of a CMOS-based Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MAPS).

■Can you share your method of refreshing your mind when facing difficulties in research and work?

Recently, I’ve been getting more active. When I move, I opt to walk instead of driving in the KEK, using the time to think through research plans. And on holidays, I enjoy going trekking and mountain climbing with my family to refresh my mind.

We look forward to your future activities at the IPNS!
