43 undergraduate and graduate students gathered from Southeast Asian countries—Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Thailand—
The Particle Physics School in South-East Asia (PPSSEA) has been held every two years since 2011 under the initiative of KEK, with the aim of fostering young researchers and establishing a scientific and technological foundation in order to advance particle physics and accelerator science in Southeast Asian countries. This time the school was held from January 19 to 24 at Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University (UIN) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
43 undergraduate and graduate students from Southeast Asian countries—Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Thailand—participated in the one-week program of lectures on theoretical particle physics, experimental particle physics, accelerators, and detector technology, led by 4 researchers from KEK. While attending lectures and hands-on training during the school, participants were divided into four groups and actively interacted with each other beyond national and cultural differences to prepare presentation materials on the final day of the school.

Norma Sidik Risdianto from UIN, the main local organizer of this school, previously participated as a student in the 2nd school held in Indonesia in 2012. He says the connections made among students during that school have continued, and many of them are now active as researchers and educators in particle physics-related fields in Indonesia. He also encouraged students to engage in active networking during this year’s school.
Prof. Shohei Nishida, who served as the principal of this school, reflected on the entire school and said “Many enthusiastic students from Indonesia and other countries joined the school. We hope to continue promoting active exchanges in the field of particle physics between KEK and Southeast Asian countries in the future.”

We hope that more students from Southeast Asian countries will dive into the world of particle physics by participating in this school.
