Dr. Go Yoshida, Assistant Professor at the Radiation Science Center, received the Best Presentation Award at the 3rd Joint Meeting of the Japanese Society of Radiation Safety Management (JRSM) and the Japanese Society of Health Physics (JHPS) on December 3. The awarded presentation was entitled "Activation status for metal components in the cyclotron for PET-nuclide production."
This research aims to establish a roadmap for efficient disposal of metallic materials of a cyclotron for PET- nuclide production. The guideline of disposal way for the metallic materials such as cyclotron-yoke has not been prepared yet, currently all of the metal components are disposed of as radioactive waste.
Dr. Yoshida and co-authors investigated in detail “where”, “what nuclide”, and “how much” were generated in the entire yoke of a cyclotron that has been in operation for 30 years, by using non-destructive analysis with various γ-ray detectors, destructive analysis with core sampling, and Monte Carlo calculation. They revealed the three-dimensional radioactivity distribution of 54Mn and 60Co for the cyclotron-yoke.
This research was appreciated for organizing the novel ways for evaluating activation of the cyclotron-yoke both experimental and simulation, and led to this award.
