Dr. Go Yoshida, Assistant Professor of Radiation Science Center, received the Academic Award of the Radiation Engineering Division of the Atomic Energy Society of Japan on September 8, 2022.
The awarded paper is ” Investigation into activation of accelerators at various synchrotron radiation facilities in Japan" written by Dr. Yoshida as the first author and published in the Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology. The paper summarizes the results of a large-scale activation survey at representative synchrotron radiation facilities in Japan in order to establish systematic guidelines for accelerator decommissioning. In this work, neutron flux during accelerator operation was measured with various dosimeters, and Monte Carlo simulations were performed at some facilities to verify the spatial distribution of neutrons and their spectra. Beam loss points showing relatively high dose rates were identified by sodium iodide (NaI) scintillation survey-meters, and the radionuclides and their radioactivity were determined by lanthanum bromide (LaBr3) scintillation spectrometers. The results showed that no radionuclides were detected in the beamline tunnels made of concrete except for natural radioisotopes. Almost beamline components were not activated, or the amount of activity was very small even in the activated area. From these results, they concluded that synchrotron radiation facilities generated only few radioactive waste in spite of their using high energy particles.
This research was appreciated for contributing greatly to the establishment of systematic guidelines for accelerator decommissioning for synchrotron radiation facilities, and led to this award.
