25th Workshop on Environmental Radioactivity Held

 (English translation 2024-09-12)

The 25th Workshop on Environmental Radioactivity, hosted by the Radiation Science Center and the Alpha Emitter and Environmental Radioactivity Subcommittee of the Japan Society of Nuclear and Radiochemical Science, was held at Kobayashi Hall at KEK from March 11th to 13th, 2024. This workshop was started in 2000 following the JCO criticality accident in 1999 and is held at KEK every March. It has three basic themes: 1) radioactivity in the natural environment, 2) radiation and radioactivity in the nuclear facility environment, and 3) the accident at the Tokyo Electric Power Company's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
Since 2012, following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, this workshop has been a place for the exchange of information, attracting a large number of participants, including researchers and engineers involved in environmental radioactivity and radiation measurements related to the accident, as well as local government officials and the general public. However, during the period from 2020 to 2023, due to the spread of COVID-19, the workshops were canceled (2020), held completely remotely (2021, 2022), and only oral presentations were given on-site in consideration of infection control measures (2023).
This time, for the first time in five years, the workshop was held on-site in the previous style, with all oral and poster presentations being conducted face-to-face, with one invited lecture, one special session, 18 general oral presentations, and 30 poster presentations. 107 people participated in person at the venue, and 31 people watched the event online. It reminded us of the value of a face-to-face session with lively Q&A and exchanges during oral and poster presentations.
In the end, a group photo was taken with all the on-site participant and four excellent presentations by undergraduate students and young researchers were awarded the Workshop Encouragement Award.
